Positive Vibes At Coachella: A$AP Rocky, Disclosure + The Kills
Coachella was excellent on a number of levels, but what really made us happy was that for the first time in years, there were no sandstorms. For a festival hosted in a dry desert with notoriously horrible weather, this was a massive win. Nice, Mother Nature.
As always, the performances were on point. Highlights included the triumphant return of The Kills, and headliner Calvin Harris, who was joined onstage by Rihanna (and whose girlfriend Taylor Swift attended in support). Maddie Ziegler, dance prodigy and star of several Sia videos, joined the faceless artist onstage for an epic performance, along with Kristen Wiig. A$AP Rocky slayed (with a surprise appearance from Kanye West), lording over a crowd that was pleasantly covered in a weed cloud. Guns n’ Roses brought out the over-40 crowd, proving that you don’t need to be a zygote to get lit, and Kesha’s surprise appearance killed it. Disclosure performed with Sam Smith and Lorde, and there were tears. And a considerate fave was Diplo at his Jack Ü performance (also featuring a cameo from Kanye), who was kind to the crowd, telling everyone to take a minute to cool off in the 100-degree weather. Many thanks to Diplo—it was necessary.
The parties were also major this past weekend. One of the best daytime events came courtesy of Galore magazine, who, in a California-friendly touch, handed out pre-rolled joints and lighters at their pool party. The Calvin Klein party was a massive, incredible event, casually set in an airplane hanger and filled with people that may or may not have all been on Molly (let’s just say they were very, very happy). Headline DJ/producer Alesso and Virgil Abloh kept the party going until five in the morning. Nothing says “lit,” like the sun rising.
But the surprise winner of the weekend had to be none other than Uber. The car service set up a tent with DJs, lights, a dance floor, and couches, where you could lounge while waiting for your driver to text a specific pick-up spot. In other words, heaven. In other Uber news, a friend who attended Coachella told me that a driver sold her homegrown weed straight out of the trunk of his car, which was “hilarious, and very business-savvy.” Good job, Coachella.
