Get Lost in The Weirdest, Most WTF Beauty Trends of 2016
2016 has been a wild ride to say the least, and that doesn’t exclude the beauty industry. To ensure that you didn’t miss out on any of the highlights, we compiled the weirdest beauty moments and trends to pop up over the last year.
Contouring one’s face is a trend that quickly and unsurprisingly spun out of control fast, starting at around the same time Kim K revealed it as one of her favorite beauty secrets. And soon after, beauty experts and dabblers alike began experimenting with the technique, venturing into uncharted and frankly bizarre territories. While the examples abound, the one we’re zeroing in on here is nail contouring—because if there’s one thing your nails need, it’s to look…thinner and more chiseled? Deemed by Cosmopolitan as the best way to get “fake long AF nails,” nail contouring has been popping up all over the runway recently, and is surely on its way to becoming one of fall’s biggest trends.
Ok so maybe nail contouring isn’t as weird as we thought—at least not in light of butt contouring. True, we’ve seen people contour nearly every body part known to man, from their collarbones to their feet, but never in a million years did we think contouring would enter ass territory (ignorant, we know). It’s almost as if beauty bloggers kicked off 2016 by asking themselves: how can we ruin everyone’s love for Anastasia Beverly Hills’ highly-coveted contour kit? #Buttcontouring, that’s apparently how.
Who would have thought that, back in 2010, Willow Smith would’ve had the wherewithal to predict one of 2016’s most popular runway beauty trends? As i-D astutely noted, ear makeup may have been the preferred beauty look on the runway this year, but it’s ultimately our favorite woke teen who first ushered this trend into existence, giving us the gift of a single painted earlobe six years before it caught on in the industry.
Pumpkin Spice Latte-Themed Anything
We’ve all heard the jokes about how much the basic Bs love their pumpkin spice lattes come fall, and while we would certainly never encourage such a deplorable trend, we’re almost too fascinated not to cover some of the pumpkin spice-flavored alternatives out there. Apparently, pumpkin spice-scented highlighters are officially a thing, having made its way onto Etsy and, it appears, into some people’s hearts. And then there’s pumpkin spice hair. If you’re into that sort of thing.
Like contouring, highlighting became one of those trends that were taken just a couple steps too far. It swiftly turned to strobing, which then turned to highlighter-only makeup looks that soon became the topic of every beauty guru’s YouTube tutorials. And now that Forever 21’s rainbow highlighter has become a thing, we’re honestly thinking this might be the look for us to try. Or is that just the possessed beauty blogger in us talking?
