Glamour + Toilets: Cass Bird's Photos of The Met Gala Bathroom For 'Vogue'
It’s no secret that bathrooms serve as a semi-sacred bonding place for women (all women, no matter what our nation’s most messed up laws may say). Whether it was your first middle school dance or the club last Saturday, you can probably recall at least one heartwarming, late night experience that took place in the safe confines of a slightly unhygienic restroom. Which is why we’re grateful that the New York-based artist, photographer, and director Cass Bird set up shop in the Met Gala bathroom, documenting the off-duty, carefree, and goofy BTS moments of the attendees at this year’s event for Vogue. Needless to say, they’re fantastic.
Bird started documenting the bathroom break photos at last year’s Met Ball; Anna Wintour had set a selfie ban in place, so the photographer set up shop in the bathroom and started snapping away. As Bird told Vogue, “I loved it, I would do it again.” So they let her have at it. As her photos display, the real party was happening amongst the toilets. Cass captured Lady Gaga helping Kate Hudson with her’ train, supermodel Joan Smalls striking a pose in a stall, and even a cameo from Public School duo Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow. Other snaps include pics of Zoë Kravitz, Kate Bosworth with Proenza Schouler designers Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough, Jennifer Hudson, Ciara, former Vogue creative director/legend/icon Grace Coddington, and many, many major models. We couldn’t be more jealous. Maybe next year we can just buy tickets to the Met Bathroom Ball instead of the actual Met Ball? Maybe they’ll will be cheaper. Until then, we’ll just look at the pictures and pray.
