Raf, you're making us weep.

Heartbreak of the Week: Raf Simons Is Leaving Dior

In news that comes as an utter shock to just about everyone, Raf Simons made a surprise announcement this morning that he is leaving his post as creative director at Dior.

The only explanation that Simons cited for the move was ‘personal reasons.’ In a statement to WWD, he said, “It is a decision based entirely and equally on my desire to focus on other interests in my life, including my own brand, and the passions that drive me outside my work. “

Simons has reigned supreme at Dior for nearly four years, a tenure that saw him steer the legendary house into a decidedly more minimal and refined direction after the extravagance of his predecessor John Galliano. Simons’ abrupt departure is perhaps most surprising given the rave reviews and commercial success that he fostered through the entirety of his stay.

His exit is effective immediately, making his floral-laden presentation in the courtyard of the Louvre during Paris Fashion Week two weeks ago his very last. The loss for Dior is incalculable, but the loss for fashion enthusiasts everywhere is heartbreaking. As the search for Dior’s next fearless leader begins, you’ll find us at home, cup of tea in hand and watching the documentary Dior & I for the umpteenth time, carefully tracking the impeccable grace and dignity of the one and only Raf.
