Laverne Cox Is Rocky Horror's New Frank-N-Furter

She’s just a sweet transgender from Transexual, Transylvania, who’s ready for you to stay the night. From the Litchfield prison walls to a derelict castle, Orange Is The New Black actress Laverne Cox is ready to take on her biggest role ever. Next year she’ll be playing the sexually ambiguous and flirtatious alien mad scientist Frank-N-Furter for Fox’s remake of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Cox is going to have big heels to fill, as she pulls on the fishnets made famous by a leather-corseted Tim Curry in the original Broadway adaptation and film.

We'll bow down, step to the left, and time warp into the new year as we wait for the remake.

As much as we love the fact that the reboot is ditching the white cisgender norm with a badass trans woman of color, the “reimagining” of the cult film is still going to be directed, produced, and choreographed by High School Musical’s Kenny Ortega. Let’s hope it’s more ‘Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch Me’ than ‘Bop to the Top.’ This could be the start of something new (and sanitized for mass audiences) under Ortega’s direction, but we’re hoping the bite, sex, and androgyny of the original stays. After all, there’s a reason the 1975 film has still been bringing out weekly crowds at movie theaters across the country for forty years—serving up the longest running theatrical run in movie history.

All of the creatures of the night are shivering with anticipation over Laverne's takeover.

As the creatures of the night wait for the light to turn on over at the Frankenstein Place, the Milk Office will be frantically creating our dream list of actors to play the rest of the roles in the reboot. Michael B. Jordan as Rocky? Cara Delevingne’s eyebrows as Janet? With a bit of a mind slip, we’ll be into a time slip where anything is possible—including an even queerer Rocky Horror reboot. It’s time to time warp into the new year.
