Politics and really cool hats.

Runway Rundown: Pyer Moss Gets Scrambled

The Pyer Moss show at MADE Fashion Week was perfect for a cold winter day. While women modeled the clothes, the collection was directed towards men, featuring slouchy sweatpants and cozy coats. We wanted to just crawl into all of it. Read on for our Runway Rundown.

The Look Lowdown…

Sexy airline. Models were dressed in classic shearling jackets and tailored separates, complete with aviators and pilot-style caps. It was simultaneously cozy and well tailored, making the collection perfect for freezing days like today: you could stay warm, but still be pulled together.

The Songs We Had to Shazam…

All of them. There was a live quintet playing chamber music, while a full choir performed beautiful versions of hip-hop songs, including tracks from Fetty Wap and Future, and a special performance of the Black American National Anthem, “Lift every Voice and Sing.”

It’s in the Details…

The caps were covered in pins with names of various drugs, including Lean, Xanax, Molly, and Prozac. Everyone ate it up. We love that the collaboration between Pyer Moss designer Kerby Jean-Raymond and Erykah Badu, who styled the show, was so full of humor.

The Vibe…

There was a lot of joy and inclusion in the room. People were living for the music, which lent the show a real feeling of grandeur. So many aspects of the show incorporated elements of both seriousness and humor. The clothes were impeccable, but they came with drug pins. The music was soaringly beautiful, but often profane and hilarious. During the finale, the models stood in place for a few seconds, perfect for getting photos for social media. Jean-Raymond is just a really clever dude.

Critical Messaging…

The show’s final model came out with a picket sing reading, “My demons won today. I’m sorry.” These were the final words of Black Lives Matter activist Marshawn McCarrell II, who committed suicide earlier this week. Jean-Raymond always keeps the political in mind. It was done beautifully.
