Meet Kim Petras, Your New 2000's Queen
ICYMI, it’s official – the 2000s are back, and she’s returned in full force.
From fashion, to music, to pop culture, the 2000’s have officially taken over. Out with the chokers, in with the tiny frame sunglasses. Say goodbye to your 90’s-grunge flannels, and say hello to low-waist, midriff-baring flared jeans and paperboy caps. The 2000’s have risen in popularity within the blink of an eye, and riding this ever-growing wave of 2000’s-era mania is German pop artist Kim Petras, whose poppy debut single, “I Don’t Want It At All”, made massive waves on the Spotify Global Viral charts this past August.
If her name sounds at all familiar, you might recall seeing her name and face on news headlines a while back, when in 2009, Petras announced on her personal blog that she had undergone gender reassignment surgery at the age of 16, likely making her one of the youngest people ever to have undergone the surgery. Appearing on variety of news broadcasts and publications, Petras has been an outspoken advocate for trans rights and trans visibility from the age of 13.
Fast-forward to 2017, when she dropped her sugar-sweet, candy-coated pop single, “I Don’t Want It At All” in mid-August. Produced by the controversial Dr. Luke — who aside from his credits on an impressive roster of monster-pop hits, is perhaps best known for his involvement in a series of 2014 lawsuits filed by pop artist, Kesha, alleging sexual assault — the song is an undeniably, 2000’s inspired, saccharine smash. It’d be an understatement to say that we’re obsessed. As of now, along with her debut track, she’s released two other singles, “Hills ft. Baby E,” and “Hillside Boys“. We f*** with the vision.
In a true demonstration of the mysterious and magical power that the 2000’s era holds, Petras was recently photographed with the ultimate queen of the decade, the iconic, Paris Hilton herself. Just yesterday, she even posted a video to her Instagram of herself lip-syncing to the song. If Paris likes it, it’s a certified jam.
Check Kim out, she’s a 2000’s dream come true. And we can’t get enough.
