Milk's Guide To Art Basel Miami 2015

In my opinion, the coolest event in Miami is definitely Pitbull’s New Year’s Eve Revolution. What could be better than an evening with Mr. Worldwide himself? He tops the charts! He oozes charisma! He was a great Empire guest star for two minutes! Dalé!

BUT, in the worlds of fashion and art, Pitbull falls far behind the monster that is Art Basel Miami. It’s kind of like Fashion Week, but closer to the equator. Plus art. Can’t forget the art, even if you’re super, super hungover from a night out with bro-artists and the supermodels they’re trying to sleep with. Does looking at a bunch of Jeffrey Deitch’s most prized works make a hangover better or worse? Only time will tell. Here’s our guide to some of the best of Basel 2015.

Devonté Hynes & Ryan McNamara: “Dimensions

The musician and the performance artist are taking over the Pérez Art Museum on Thursday, for a piece that incorporates a composition by Hynes and sculpture and choreography from McNamara. According to the museum, “the performance is an allegory of Miami’s history as a place of fantasy and fragmentation.” If it has anything to do with our fantasy of Miami, it will involve a Will Smith-inspired soundtrack and several images of Dexter in his Henley murder shirts.

Giorgio Moroder & Horse Meat Disco

The Edition Hotel always plays host to some of the best, craziest Basel parties. Disco king Giorgio Moroder—the man literally invented the genre—is taking over on Thursday night for a wild night of sparkly music. Is it too much to hope that collaborator Britney Spears shows up?

Daniel Arsham: “The Future Was Written”

This interactive exhibition features over 2,000 pieces of chalk that symbolize outmoded forms of communication, like cameras and desktop computers. All visitors to the exhibition are encouraged to draw on a nearby wall, just like an especially hip elementary school playground. The installation is up through December 11th at the National YoungArts Foundation, so there’s plenty of time to leave your mark.

ASAP Mob & Know Wave: Worldwide Knowledge Wave

Aaron Bondaroff’s pirate radio station is teaming up with A$AP Mob for an afternoon happening at the Shelborne Hotel on Friday. The party features sounds by A$AP Mob, ILoveMakonnen, Milk pal Virgil Abloh, and more, with special “surprise guests.”

Petra Collins & Madelyne Beckles: “Fuck Boi Funeral”

Tonight, December 2nd, at the Standard Miami, Petra will be burying the fuck boi. She and Beckles call their piece “a celebration of the end of minimalist, objective forms of art production,” where they attempt to create a safe space for women. The funeral will feature images by Collins and a performance by Beckles and Alexandra Marzella.

Westway R.I.P Presents: Art Basel Miami Beach Party

The dearly departed Westway was shuttered earlier this year, but it’s getting resurrected on Thursday, December 3rd. The crew from the club is throwing a rager at the Surf Lodge pop-up at the Hall Hotel, featuring sounds from Abloh (he’s busy this week), Mazurbate, and a live performance from Internet genius Yung Jake.

Galore x Delmar: Basel Bombshells

New York City’s Up & Down and 1 Oak are coming to Miami Beach. On Thursday, at the Rockwell Pop-Up, Miguel will be performing at an event featuring sets by the likes of Mia Moretti and Chelsea Leyland. Given the sexiness of Miguel’s music, the hot weather in Florida, and all the roving bikini models, we’re sure it’ll be steamy.
