Alexander Wang Made Jenny Humphrey's Dream Wardrobe
Alexander Wang knows all about shock value, and this season it was clear that’s what the designer was going for. He staged his Fall/Winter ’16 fashion show at Saint Bartholomew’s church, sending the Wang Gang (that included musician Alice Glass) out in a collection that would make Gossip Girls’ resident rebel Jenny Humphrey shriek with delight. It was as if he took your family’s country club wardrobe and mashed it up with an angsty teen’s wish list from Hot Topic—a little bit prim, and a whole lot punk.
Upper East Side tweeds were subverted with skin-baring cutouts and chain link straps, and pot leaves were used to embellish throughout, on everything from intarsia minis to silky camisoles. Stopping just short of plastering his name all over the collection (as he’s done in seasons past), Wang sent out t-shirts, beanies, and tights emblazoned with the words “girls,” “strict,” and “tender,” that are just begging to be Instagrammed, along with the pole dancer-print sweaters and Nantucket-ready pastel pants. Standouts were his cozy, fuzzy fabrics cut in rave-inspired tank tops, striped sweater dresses, and lining denim jackets.
And it wouldn’t be a Wang collection without a statement shoe. Studded booties, hi-top sneakers, and platform-soled Wallabees stomped down the runway, but the true standout accessory this season was the jewelry. Oversized earrings, chain link chokers, and leather dog collars completed each look, rounding out the hard-edged aesthetic. Newly freed from his commitments at Balenciaga,Wang seemed to be designing with a weight lifted off his shoulders, free to expand on his signatures—with a side of sacrilege.
