Ohne Titel Founders on The end of their label and what's next
After nine years in the biz, NYC-based womenswear label Ohne Titel (German for “untitled,” pronounced oh-neh tee-tell) is closing for good. The label, helmed by designers Alexa Adams and Flora Gill, will no longer be available after their SS16 collection; the FW16 collection that they showed last New York Fashion Week will not reach production. As one of our favorite MADE alumni, we’ll be sad to see them go.
“It definitely is a really rigorous schedule in the fashion industry,” Gill told us. Yet that had little to no influence on their decision to shutter the line. “It was more that we just felt [the brand got] as far as it was going to get with our current structure…we really needed to think of a new way to structure our business and structure our creative endeavors.” After talking to them, it seems they’re also hungry for a bit more creative freedom. “We needed a business partner that could’ve taken it further, from a business perspective,” Adams said.
But as they say, when one door closes, another one opens. “In some ways, ending something kind of makes it available for us to do other, new things that we’re really excited about,” Adams said. “So even though it’s sad that Ohne Titel is ending, there are new projects that we can start working on.”
One could argue that Ohne Titel thrived thanks to their synergistic design philosophies. The pair met in 1999 at the Parsons School of Design and worked for established brands like Karl Lagerfeld before launching their own independent label in 2006. Ohne Titel’s collections have been defined by vibrancy, with angular designs and curved seams that create mix-and-match, body-hugging pieces befitting of urban cool girls.
So what kind of projects do the longtime friends have in the works? Adams mentioned a “creative book project that Flora and I are working on.” But in general, they’re keeping mum—at least for now. “We have a bunch of creative projects in the works that I think will come out little by little,” Gill said. “There are actually so many possibilities—right now we’re just deciding which ones are the best ones to move forward with, and which ones we want to do.”
We can’t wait to see what the future holds for this talented pair.
