Ogle The Mindblowing Work of Photographers Mert & Marcus
Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott are to fashion as cheese is to a burrito—it just wouldn’t be the same without them. A trusted favorite of fashion editors and models alike, photography duo Mert & Marcus (as their known in the industry) have spent years building up their portfolio and, ultimately, their legacy. And now, with over two decades worth of work, the pair is getting the spotlight they deserve. This October, Art Partner and Phillips Mayfair are putting on a solo exhibition comprised of the duo’s work between 2001 and 2014. The show will first open in London, and will then move on to Paris in November.
Mert & Marcus first met in 1994 and have been collaborative partners ever since, regularly shooting celebrities and models for some of the most illustrious magazines in the industry. They’ve shot for every Vogue under the sun, W, Self Service, Interview, LOVE, and so many more. Remember that 2014 issue of Playboy where Kate Moss posed for the cover and a titillating spread? Mert & Marcus. Or how about that issue of LOVE where Cara Delevingne appeared on the cover immersed in a bathtub? That was them too.
In a field as oversaturated as fashion photography, Mert & Marcus have done the impossible: they’ve developed an invaluable style that’s uniquely their own. Which is why we’ve compiled some of our favorite images of theirs above. Peruse their work, and you’ll notice a certain hyper-real, futuristic, oftentimes saturated quality permeated throughout. Their images are romantic and jarring all at the same time—and we have a feeling it’ll translate quite seamlessly into a museum retrospective.
