Pantone's New Colors Of The Year Will Soothe Your Soul
Pantone has picked its new colors of the year: a pale pink called Rose Quartz, and a light blue, Serenity. The 2016 selection is the first time the color institute has ever selected more than one shade, and we’re into it. Serenity and Rose Quartz are soft, lovely, and way nicer than last year’s Marsala, which kind of looked like a used tampon. Looking at them is soothing as hell.
In addition to being chill AF, the colors are a direct nod towards fashion’s embrace of gender fluidity. As Pantone says, “In many parts of the world we are experiencing a gender blur as it relates to fashion, which has in turn impacted color trends throughout all other areas of design. This more unilateral approach to color is coinciding with societal movements toward gender equality and fluidity.” Pantone agrees: Gender is so 2014.
WWD also pointed out that in addition to their political timeliness, Rose Quartz and Serenity are way trendy. Designers like Miu Miu, J.W. Anderson, Jil Sander, and Chanel have all sent models marching out in variations of pale pinks and blues. We would also like to point out that our entire Instagram explore page is covered in pale pink. Crystals have also become an embarrassing kind of status symbol, making Rose Quartz especially relevant to the downtown set.
But, screw the analysis. These colors are sooooooo pretty.
