Patrick Church Is Democratizing NYFW With A HELL OF MY OWN MAKING
ICYMI, NYFW is here. But, it’s also kind of over — runways don’t really claim style authority anymore, and we’re more prone to finding trends on the streets of downtown New York than we are in the pages of a magazine. That said, designers still have to present their new collections, and we still want the tea on what they’re cooking up this season. Enter Patrick Church: by circumventing the traditional route of presentation in favor of his own, one-of-a-kind party, dubbed A HELL OF MY OWN MAKING, the designer made an all-inclusive splash — this time centered on duality and the dichotomy of heaven and hell.
“We opened up the presentation for anyone to be part of it, removing the exclusive nature of fashion week that can often feel overwhelming,” Church says. “We wanted everyone to have an opportunity to be a part of our presentation. We feel as though we have created a big family.”
The words fashion and family aren’t often found in the same sentence, but for Church, they couldn’t be more closely intertwined. This year, guests were literally the face of the collection: by wearing complete looks and getting photographed in a custom set, Church says, “We are hoping it kind of turns into a piece of performance art. We want it to be about the people, that’s the most important thing to us.”
If Power To The People is the theme of NYFW 2019, sign us up. And if you’re in NYC, you can still play a part in Church’s presentation: show up between 4-10 pm at 117 Beekman Street today for a chance to get dressed and photographed in style.
