Pirelli's 2016 Calendar Girls are Smart, Sexy and SFW
Since its inception in 1964, the Pirelli Calendar has worn many different faces. What started out as simply a provocative way to sell tires soon became synonymous with portraits of fully-nude supermodels by iconic photographers. Now, for its 2016 edition, the calendar is making yet another shift—this time, away from the objectification of women, and toward the celebration of them.
The photographs, shot by the incomparable Annie Leibovitz, have all just been released, and they display an unprecedentedly varied cast of characters—the likes of which include Serena Williams, Patti Smith, Fran Lebowitz, Ava DuVernay, and Amy Schumer, among others. Schumer was particularly excited about her portrait, saying in a promo video for the calendar, “I felt I looked more beautiful than I’ve ever felt in my life, and I felt like it looked like me.”
The women in the calendar are all, for the most part, there because of their intellectual achievements. And while most of the subjects are fully-clothed, and no one is greased up or put in overtly suggestive positions, this by no means is to say the portraits are decidedly starchy or asexual. In fact, they do a beautiful job at capturing a multidimensional picture of the female character, and there is still an inherently powerful sexuality that exudes from all of the portraits. Well done, Pirelli.
