Premiere: Ritual Talk Shares New Video For "If"
Psychedelic rock band Ritual Talk has been on a roll since the release of their debut album Plans (out last fall). Now, they’re celebrating another release: with a new song and video, premiering today exclusively on Milk.xyz.
“If” was filmed in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and directed by NYC director Sara Laufer, and follows the band—namely Alex DeSimine, Tom Criblez, and Dylan Gleit—on a dreamy, hazy trip that prompts self-reflection (literally—all three of the band member’s faces are covered with mirrors in an effort to redirect our perspective).
“From the very beginnings of writing the tune to reviewing the final edits of the visuals, every step of this process was incredibly fluid—which was especially satisfying since we wrote this song together as a group, a new strategy for us,” the band says. “So it was perfectly fitting that the experience of working with Sara to bring a visual element to the feeling of ‘If’ followed suit—the concept and aesthetic of the video fell together so naturally.”
Director Laufer brought the song to life intuitively and used the mirrors as an unexpected element that could interact with light and shadow.
“My impression of the song was simple: it feels like a warm summer day, and we wanted to reflect this feeling in the video,” she says. “Faces are replaced with mirrors, both reflecting the surrounding plant life and becoming light sources themselves. It’s really special to have the flexibility to play with visuals and find ways to interact with a setting, getting back to the magic of connecting with subjects and thinking on your feet.”
Watch “If” above, and catch Ritual Talk on tour now until June 28.
