PSA: You Can Now Major in Beyoncé
Ever wanted to study all of Bey‘s greatest lyrics, videos, and (obviously) analyze the shit out of Lemonade? Well, now you can—for the low, low cost of tuition at The University of Copenhagen. The Denmark university is now offering a course titled “Beyonce, Gender, and Race”, and they’ve already had to upgrade to a larger lecture hall due to its high attendance count.
Professor Erik Steinskog spoke to TV2 about the course, which is designed to be an academic course where arts and cultural studies undergraduates can pick up credits towards their degree.
“We will analyze her songs and music videos,” he says. “There will be a focus on gender, sexuality, and race. One of the goals is to introduce black feminist thought, which is not very well known in Scandinavia.”
The cultural influence of Beyoncé is undeniable. As arguably the most sought-after music artist in the industry, Beyoncé’s music is consistently revolutionary for black female artists and resonates greatly with issues like Black Lives Matter and feminism.
Speaking of this specific aspect of Bey’s presence in the music industry, he said, “Beyoncé is important in understanding the world we live in. [She] is one of the biggest pop artists today, which makes her important in an analysis of contemporary times.”
If nothing else, this is one lecture you definitely won’t sleep through.
