Red Bull Music Academy is Finna Take Over DTLA
Announced at The Resident in DTLA last night with a DJ set via Rail Up—a queer, LA-based LatinX crew—Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) dropped some big news—a big ass music festival coming our way, for almost the entirety of October (October 6-29, to be exact).
In addition to RBMA’s annual NYC festival that takes place every spring, the Los Angeles series will be focusing on LA’s roots in old school hip hop, as well as welcoming new artists, to create a fully immersive experience complete with a Director’s Series, Studio Science sessions, and live shows.
Uncle Jamm’s Army will reunite for a special set with Ice-T, St. Vincent will be premiering a new live show, and artist Ryoji Ikeda is bringing 100 cars together to create the world’s largest synth orchestra.
Via Open Beta, Taran Allen’s multimedia sandbox venue will become home to a handful of select events where artists are invited to co-create an ever-changing space with him; including Arca and introducing SOPHIE’s brand new show.
Obviously, this multi-faceted LA event wouldn’t be complete without a nod to film. Bringing in Floria Sigismondi (of Marilyn Manson’s music video and The Handmaid’s Tale fame) and Edgar Wright (think Shaun of the Dead and Baby Driver), RBMA, is hosting a discussion on the role of music in film.
Going forward with its Studio Science series, mixing and mastering genius Benjamin Tierney (Flying Lotus, J Dilla, and Kamasi Washington) will be in the lineup alongside the legendary Bernie Grundman, who mastered Prince’s “Purple Rain” and Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to give us a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes process.
Full event details and tickets will be released on August 22; for now, sign for more info here and peep the graphic below for a first taste of what’s to come. Featured image via Hip Hop Golden Age; graphic courtesy of Red Bull Music Academy
