Grace Jones' Most Bizarre + Iconic Outfits Will Leave You Speechless
When it comes to Grace Jones, words like “legendary” and “iconic” don’t seem sufficient. Born in 1948 and slaying since the ’70s, Jones slid seemingly effortlessly into the world of acting, singing, and modeling. Along the way, the Jamaican-born star has taken acid with the Hells Angels, been banned from Walt Disney World, become one of Andy Warhol’s muses, and served up enough looks to keep us reaching for our LifeAlert for decades.
Whether she’s on stage, onscreen, or walking down the street, Jones’ influence on fashion has been as groundbreaking as the San Andreas Fault. We’ll probably never get over her Island Life album cover in the ’80s, and we’re still recovering from seeing her go topless at 67-years-old for last year’s AFROPUNK Festival in Brooklyn.
Now, with the news that she’ll be replacing M.I.A. as the headliner for AFROPUNK’s first-ever London festival in September, we’ve slipped into a fever dream of possibilities about what otherworldly outfits she’ll emerge in. “An icon at the heart of the art, fashion and music worlds across four decades, Grace Jones will headline the first AFROPUNK London with a cosmic performance,” the festival announced. “Since the ’70s, Grace has carved her path as a true creator.”
While we eagerly (and impatiently) await what’s sure to be a world-stopping performance, we looked back on some of the most bizarre and outrageous outfits that have taken our breath away throughout her career.
Stay tuned to Milk for more Grace Jones.
