Rihanna has designed a new collection of sunglasses for Dior that draws on the iconic shades of La Forge from Star Trek. Unsurprisingly, we want them.

Rihanna Went Intergalactic for Her Star Trek-Inspired Dior Collab

Even Scotty can’t beam us up high enough to reach Rihanna’s weed-fueled haze, so we’ll have to settle for a pair of her new shades. Queen RiRi may have just given an explosive Billboard Music Awards performance that proved her vocal talents are just as strong as her side eye, but she isn’t done doing work work work work work just yet. When she found out that Raf Simons was leaving Dior, she took a page from her “Needed Me” video and waltzed into the Dior offices, poised and ready to take over. She even added a well-placed line from “Yeah I Said It” into her pitch for good measure. At least, that’s what happened in our daydreams.

This isn’t the first time the pop diva and international style icon has worked with Dior. In 2015, she became the first black woman to be the face of Dior, and was shot by Steven Klein for the short film “Secret Garden IV,” in which she traipsed through Versailles in beautiful Dior pieces and thankfully did not try to reenact a fourth sequel to that other Secret Garden.

For her latest Dior collab, she’s stepping out of the garden and into the starship for a Star Trek-inspired collection of sunglasses perfect for everything from red eyes to throwing shade. To help craft the futuristic frames, she looked to La Forge’s iconic eyewear in Star Trek, telling WWD: “I’ve always been obsessed with his eyewear, and when I got to Dior and saw all the materials I could play with, it all just came together.”

“The process was pretty seamless. I spent a day at Dior with their eyewear design team. I started by looking through all the archives to see what they’ve done in the past, then got acquainted with all the new materials,” she said. “I literally sat there and drew and drew until I was happy with the design, and the team illustrated it for me right then and there. We picked materials and colors that same day, and after that it was a matter of weeks before I saw the first prototype.”

From picking the material to helping build the prototypes all the way to the finished frames, her involvement was never ending. And this project marked a pivotal moment for Dior as well; it’s the first time a house ambassador has ever crossed over into design. Singing her praises, Dior’s eyewear designer Mathieu Jamin told WWD, “She chose all the materials…We had a lot of different samples with different effect of metals. She chose all the lenses and took time to match all the colors together to see if it was right on her face. It was really important to her.”

The frames come in six colorways—silver, pink, blue, green, and red, all retailing for $840—with a deluxe 24-karat gold-plated version going for $1,950. And you won’t have to wait long to dress up your face like Rihanna with her intergalactic shades either. Whether you’re cooking up a scheme to skip out on paying your rent or you simply have love on the brain, you’ll be able to cop Rihanna’s Dior shades just in time for June’s sweltering heat.
