Runway Rundown: OAK Delivers Dive Bar Disco Vibes en Masse [NYFW]
OAK’s Fall RTW 2017 presentation took a delightfully grunge turn this season, filled with biker-esque clothing, dive-bar-disco vibes, and blue collar babes galore, for a retro show to remember. Models donned biker gloves, large 70s-style glasses, and slicked back hair which gave the presentation a youthful, albeit dark vibe, for an event reminiscent of San Junipero by way of Black Mirror. On the surface, this collection screams hard-edged but, aiming for a motive, one must ask: is she here to find love and be a heartbreaker, or is she here to get the job done? Such is the narrative of this season’s OAK woman.
The collection feels connected to a modern conversation through the image of a familiar, somewhat simpler time. None of the clothes are too fitted and it all reads appropriately neutral (think camel-wool coats and corduroy cropped trousers and shorts, as well as some black denim). A couple of the garments are emblazoned with the “WONTSTOP” mantra, which reads as a testament to the working woman and the evolving role this current wave of feminism plays in society (and fashion) today. Simply put: power doesn’t exist in these garments themselves but in the individual who chooses to wear them. Now that’s one mission statement we can certainly get behind in 2017.
