Runway Rundown: Vaquera x The Handmaid's Tale
Yesterday, Vaquera presented a collection inspired by the ever-present conversation surrounding the much buzzed about, controversial new Hulu series The Handmaid’s Tale. More of a performance than a runway show, it surpassed aesthetic—refreshingly so—and fearlessly transported us into a world where gender, sexuality, and color have clear rules and strict roles that dare not be broken.
One model dons a beautiful red gown with books tied to her head; the next is hidden entirely by a veil that’s just sheer enough to see the woman’s feminine undergarments beneath; and the end comes full circle with the staple bonnet of The Handmaid’s Tale. Using the power of theater and storytelling, each model is given their own character that exists in this cohesive, confining world.
What is so unique, dare I say iconic, about this presentation is the direct references and ominous, concentrated truth surrounding oppression in a time where the future is female. As Nina Simone famously said, “An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.” Here, we see Vaquera, a collective more than a brand, young, hungry, and raising its voice in a time where silence is the enemy and fashion is forward. Bravo.
