#SayHerName: The 16th Annual Trans Day of Remembrance

There’s a somber, quiet air to the world as the sun sets today, November 20th. It is the 16th annual Trans Day of Remembrance, a day when the world stops to remember the victims of anti-trans violence. The day began in 1999 after Rita Hester, a trans woman of color, was murdered in Allston, Massachusetts.

People have been posting on Twitter using #TDoR, #GirlsLikeUs, and #SayHerName to remember the primarily trans women who were targeted by violence this year. The unfortunate reality of #SayHerName is that so many victims of anti-trans violence are not even identified, nor are their murderers brought to justice. 

The Trans Day of Remembrance aims to put names to the horrifying statistics that follow trans lives, so that we don’t forget that these deaths are not just numbers, but lives.

In this year alone, 81 trans people have been murdered. Below we have listed the names of all the victims reported to TDoR and The Advocate this year:

Keyshia Blige (33 years old), fatally shot in Aurora, Ill., on March 7, 2015.

Tamara Dominguez (36 years old), repeatedly run over by a vehicle in Kansas City, Mo., on August 15, 2015.

Kandis Capri (35 years old), fatally shot in Phoenix, on August 11, 2015.

Amber Monroe (20 years old), fatally shot in Detroit, on August 8, 2015.

Ashton O’Hara (25 years old), stabbed to death and run over by a vehicle in Detroit, on July 14, 2015.

Shade Schuler (22 years old), cause of death unknown, found dead in a field in Dallas, on July 29, 2015.

K.C. Haggard (66 years old), stabbed multiple times in Fresno, Calif., on July 24, 2015.

India Clarke (22 years old), shot multiple times in Tampa, Fla., on July 21, 2015.

Mercedes Williamson (17 years old), beaten to death in Rocky Creek, Ala., on May 30, 2015.

If you’re looking to help in your own way, here are some well know charities to look into:

The Audre Lorde Project: Named after Audre Lorde herself, the group is an amazing resource of queer people of color in the New York City Area.

The Sylvia Rivera Law Project: Named for Sylvia Rivera, a co founder of STAR with Marsha P. Johnson in the 70s, helps trans people get access to health and legal services.

The Trevor Project: A suicide and crisis intervention line for any queer people seeking aid.

TGI Justice: The site identifies them as “a group of transgender people—inside and outside of prison—creating a united family in the struggle for survival and freedom.”

The Trans Lifeline: The hotline is “dedicated to the well being of transgender people. We run a hotline staffed by transgender people for transgender people. Trans Lifeline volunteers are ready to respond to whatever support needs members of our community might have.”
