Sigrid on "Don't Kill My Vibe" And Cozy, Practical Fashion

Norway’s done it again: after delivering the musical gift that is Emma Jensen, we’ve returned for yet another gem—Sigrid. Empowered and entirely unafraid to tell it like it is, this singer-songwriter has just dropped her debut single, “Don’t Kill My Vibe”, and, lucky for us, it’s just as delectably full of sass and spunk as the title implies.

We sat down with Sigrid for a quick chat mid-tour to talk her new single, subsequent signing with Island Records, and what’s next for this breakout songstress (in her own words, “there will be some new music quite soon!”). Peep the new single below, and keep scrolling for our full interview. Wanna see this IRL? If you’re in NYC, you’ve come to the right place—just pop by her Baby’s All Right show next Tuesday, March 7.

Let’s talk about your debut single, “Don’t Kill My Vibe.”

Yeah! I wrote it with Martin Sjølie, who’s a Norwegian writer, and it was such a fun experience. I loved it. I remember he asked what I had been thinking about the past week—I had been feeling quite terrible. “Don’t Kill My Vibe” just came out of that, and the reception has been great. I’m honored to get all this lovely feedback. It has been incredible.

How did you first get started?

To be honest I think I decided when I was really young. Music was the only that I really loved.

And congratulations on signing with Island Records! How did that come about?

After we went to New York to meet labels, I met with Island US and we just clicked. We had a really good connection really quickly and then we signed right after that in November. I’m just really excited and honored to have such a good family. And creating the whole “Don’t Kill My Vibe” experience—it was a team effort.

So as far as how your style effects your music, and vice versa—what are your thoughts for dressing on stage and off?

I think the most important things for me with my style is being comfortable, to be honest. I spend so much time in the studio so its important to wear clothes that I can move in on stage. It’s often shorts—it gets really hot and warm on stage so it’s nice to have something easy and fun.

The whole Fashion Week experience was really fun—I went a couple of weeks ago in New York for the first time ever. It was a really cool experience. I like wearing jeans and rompers a lot. But a year from now, we’ll see—it will be fun to see if it’s totally different by then.

Right, just like music evolves, your style probably will too.

Yeah!

And can you talk a little about your upcoming EP?

Yeah, the EP. New music is coming, definitely. There will be some new music quite soon! My family knows all my songs by now and all the lyrics, so it’s almost time to share!

How are you feeling about your Baby’s All Right show next Tuesday?

I’m really looking forward to the show, and the band is really excited as well.
