Radical Punk versus Radical Racism

Skinhead Patrick Stewart Terrifies in 'Green Room' Trailer

Earlier today, production company A24 released its Red Band trailer for Green Room, and it’s just punched, kicked, and screamed its way onto our must-see list. It’ll be released on April 15th, so get your taxes done early.

Conceptually, the film builds off of a classic horror conceit: youngsters are trapped in a life-or-death standoff. In Green Room, the hostages are members of the punk band The Ain’t Rights, who accidentally bear witness to a gruesome murder at a seedy club in rural Oregon. Unbeknownst to them, the club is run by a thuggish pack of white supremacists, and, now, they’re the ones in the neo-Nazis’ sights. What follows is guaranteed to be a twisty thrill ride, full of kicked-in amps, and snapped-off arms.

Green Room stars a great cast of rising talent, including Imogen Poots, Anton Yelchin, and Alia Shawkat (aka Maeby Fünke from Arrested Development). But the main star is clearly Sir Patrick Stewart, who bucks typecasting in his portrayal of a ruthless kingpin, Darcy Banker.

The movie marks the third outing for director Jeremy Saulnier, who is quickly becoming the leader in artful horror grindhouse. His two previous films, Murder Party and Blue Ruin, similarly paired a slick style with violent grit. Green Room is his most visually stunning work yet, combining the saturated, fluorescent glow of movies like Saw with a neo-punk aesthetic.

Nazi Punks, fuck off.
