Snow Xue Gao is The Designer We've All Been Waiting For [NYFW]
Snow Xue Gao flew onto the New York fashion scene shortly after graduating from the Parsons MFA program, receiving the Rihanna stamp of approval, and soon after, winning a spot in last season’s VFILES presentation. This season, Gao gave us an even more intimate look into her personal connection to her heritage and insanely gifted ability of construction and design by crafting a collection that delivers sleek, non-traditional uses of suit jacket forms and unique draping techniques.
The use of the color gray paired with colorful Chinese prints built a satisfying infusion of texture, bending the eye to examine every detail on each jacket and pant. One model had an open jacket lined with a print that fell almost to ankle-length, drawing the eye to the skirt face that was draped over the pants. Another jacket was constructed with the lining acting almost as if it were a corset, emerging from within and attaching itself to the outside. The most stated pops of color were present in the dresses, which were nothing short of masterful both in shape and styling; a defined and refined crispness accessible for any occasion.
Gao’s most apparent strength, regarding both this and last season’s collections, is that she is an original. She is a designer who has honed in on her own technique and brand and, rather quickly, executed it with a crystal clear vision. This is one designer who has truly developed a name for herself and who has us waiting for more.
