Steal Rihanna's VMA Looks w/ this Shopping Guide
Although last night’s VMAs had many noteworthy, albeit a bit obvious, moments (Beyoncé slayed, Kanye ranted, Britney girated, Drake professed his probably unrequited love for Rihanna), our favorite takeaway from the night was the Bad Gal herself. With four spectacular career-spanning performances that led up to the final, culminating moment in which she was presented the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award (by a giddy, tux-decked Champagne Papi, no less), it’s safe to say last night was Rih’s night. Aside from playing our fave tracks, from “Pon de Replay” to “Love on the Brain,” the Bajan superstar proved why she’s one of the world’s leading fashion icons and why her relationship with stylist Mel Ottenberg will always be one of our favorites. And because Rih’s sartorial repertoire from last night costs our year’s worth of rent, we’ve come up with a solution for anyone who, like us, wishes they had more Fenty flavor in their closets. Behold, our special edition Rihanna-killed-the-VMAs shopping guide.
Pretty in Pink
Rihanna’s light pink Hood By Air look is so flawless that we’re not sure we’ll ever get over it. However, with a little bit of research and a smidgen of imagination, you could be pulling off similar vibes. With plenty baby doll tees around, cut-out wool pants and a purse double twin belt from Y/Project, and amazing wine-colored specs from Cutler and Gross (the designer, mind you, who made Rih’s pink shades), all that’s left is some cherry-red lipstick and a high-pony—and boom, you’re basically the “We Found Love” singer, last night, in HBA. Sure, the look might not be as monochrome as Rih’s, but with a similar silhouette and the right amount of confidence, you can also channel the naughty-bubble-gum-babe vibes.
Pour It Up
Leotards and pop stars go together like summer and drinking on the beach, but no matter how accustomed we are to seeing this formula on every female performer, when Rihanna does it, it’s somehow 400 times more cool. Maybe it’s the mullet, perhaps it’s the gothic jewelry, or maybe it’s just the asymmetric styling of the thigh-high Vetements boots, but whatever it is, we need it. With this hoodie from Y/Project, Jeffrey Campbell thigh-highs, and Fraulein Kink lingerie gloves, we too are ready to torture our accountants and their wives. Oh—and the faux-fur stole, bien sûr. (That’s “of course” in French.)
When Robyn took the stage for the second time, she not only brought a great performance, but she managed to throw the wildest stage rager of the night. Decked in cargo pants over fishnets, a furry pink bra, and a t-shirt worn as a hoodie underneath a do-rag, the Barbados-born singer was working it—pun most definitely intended. While this look is particularly tricky to pull off—it requires a lot of innate swag—you can try to recreate it with your own furry bra, fishnet tights, do-rag, Isa Arfen silk and cotton trousers, and a gold chain to top it all off. Bless.
Obviously Rihanna manages to still look sexy and provocative in a full-bodied gold dress with a subtle front slit—a dress, mind you, that conveniently matches her moon man. And while Riri’s haute couture Alexandre Vauthier dress will likely never make it into our closets, these trench-dresses by See by Chloe and Y/Project will have to satiate our thirst for now. Shine bright like a gold-coated diamond…as they say?
