Subtle Americana Stakes Its Claim This Season [NYFW]
This season, the 2017 NYFW RTW collections are serving up subtle, all Americana vibes. The Gigi x Tommy Hilfiger show in LA gave us life with low-rise denim and cowboy style belt buckles, while here in New York, Christian Cowan served up a fantastical, Paris Hilton finale of West World-meets-cotillion realness with large circle brim tie hats, crowns, and colorful statement chaps. VFILES continued the trend with a pair of gray statement cowboy boots and Alexander Wang joined the club with western-styled fringe on pockets and sleeves. If it isn’t already clear, Americana is back.
Another recent release of the Americana remount is Lady Gaga’s Joanne and her newest visual for her single, “John Wayne”. Both the track and the style of the video are a razor-sharp, absurd take on the could-be dusty cowboy, but Gaga aggressively thrusts herself through a bad-boy sag giving us that familiar feeling we love: that this is risky. The resurgence of Americana in fashion (as well as the mainstream music world) guarantees this: it’s only a matter of time until the rest of the pop culture world joins suit. Who said the Midwest had no say in sartorial matters? It appears we’ve been proven wrong once again (no complaints here).
