Sweaty, Summer Skin Getting You Down?
Here we are, in the (literal) thick of summer. The air is heavy and humid, and you’re stuck on the L train; there’s no AC and you’re most definitely sweating in more ways than one. As you wait for the train to start working again, you keep reminding yourself that this is the time of the year that you were yearning for back in February.
As each day gets hotter than the last, its time to change up your skincare routine to account for all the environmental stressors that are affecting your skin. We all have the ideas of what we want our skin to look like this season; hydrated, glowy and texture-free. In reality, breakouts arise like no other in the summer. Since dealing with cystic acne from my early teenage years, I am no stranger to breakouts; needless to say, I’m a fan of when my skin is clear, as I think we all are. That being said, I started to test out products and routines and found the route of the cause — hope this helps!
During these Summer months, I learned that double cleansing is key. I usually reserve that for when I do a full face of makeup, but when it comes to this August heat, even though I usually don’t wear anything but brow products, I start with an oil like the BeautyCounter Countertime Cleansing Oil. This gets off the first layer of makeup and impurities and breaks down face oils (or sebum). Next up, I take my pores to task with something that has a little exfoliating power like Tatcha The Deep Cleanse. This product cleans your pores while keeping your skin soft and hydrated. Next, we hit the toner. My current favorite is the Youth to the People Kombucha + 11% AHA Exfoliation Power Toner. Lastly, give your skin a splash of hydration with an essence to reset your hydration. The BeautyCounter Countertime Mineral Boost Hydrating Essence is formulated with their patented retinatural complex, seawater, and fermented sugars.
Now don’t forget your serums and/or your acne treatments. This was the toughest part for me to change because I had to learn to reign it in! My absolute favorite part of my skincare routine is slathering layers and layers of serums and creams all over my face, but my pores can’t handle all the goodness I was trying to give it. “Less is more,” is definitely the way to go. I chose to use only two serums, Niacid by Slurp Laboratories, a light, yet effective formula aimed at acneic skin and ClearCalm by REN Skincare that is a non-drying acne treatment gel for active breakouts. After about a week or so I started to see a decrease in new breakouts so in my books, that is a win.
The last step, of course, is a moisturizer. Naturally, I had to keep myself from adding a pump of this and a dab of that to make my perfect cocktail, but I learned that I can save this habit for all the other seasons. Recently, I have been interchanging two moisturizers: The Vital Balm Cream by Josh Rosebrook for nights when my skin is feeling tight, dry and dehydrated or Better Daze Ahead by Farmacy. This is a great moisturizer for AM and PM. It contains hemp-derived CBD and adaptogens. After one week I noticed less acne popping up, and after one month I noticed past scarring starting to lighten with an overall clearer appearance. Season by season it is a good idea to take a step back and listen to your skin. Adjusting your products seasonally can help so your skin regulate just a bit easier.
