#TBT: An Art Basel Miami Road Trip, Documented
Art Basel came and went in the blink of an eye. Even if you didn’t make it down south to Miami, the excitement of the festivities were still felt (this is the era of Instagram, after all), and we couldn’t help but follow along with all of our favorite artists and activities. Juxtapoz Clubhouse was obviously not to be missed, and apart from that, we also felt a special kinship with Artcenter/South Florida’s “Parallels & Peripheries”, an all-women show confronting societal norms around marginalized communities. And then, of course, there was the Miami Beach Convention Center itself: where hundreds of booths saw over 80,000 visitors come through during the five-day period.
Milk fam Gabby Jones took the scenic route to Florida this year, opting for a road trip instead of an airplane to make her way to Basel. And, of course, she documented the entire trip: traveling from NYC, to Richmond, Virginia, South of the Boarder, Charleston, South Carolina, Hilton Head, South Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, St. Augustine, Florida, and of course Miami.
“Being in Miami during Art Basel isn’t just about the Convention Center,” Jones says. “It’s about the people and the environment they create. Going to events filled with classic Miami eye-candy, extravagant hors d’oeuvres, expensive art installations, and drinks I definitely can’t afford (like a $12 Narragansett); from a Young Thug party to escaping to one of Miami’s many dive bars, Art Basel is certainly something you don’t want to miss. This photo diary follows my long journey down to Miami starting in New York; stopping in Virginia, Georgia, South Carolina, and ending Florida.”
