This 90's Revival Playlist Will Save Your Soul
The unforgettable decade that brought us the bucket hat, choker necklace, and bleached tips may have been 20-years ago, but these covers of tracks are still fresh. I’m a ’90s baby and as much as I love the classics, I still need that new new on my music playlist. So here’s a list of some of the best ’90s songs, covered by the best modern artists.
“So Into You” | Tamia | Cover by Childish Gambino
Prepare yourself with a change of clothes, because Childish Gambino’s soothing boy band voice covering “So Into You” will make you sweat profusely. Gambino, born Donald Glover, says this romantic tune is a favorite of his. He told MTV news that “[It was] kinda one of my favorite songs when I was like—I wouldn’t say a kid, but it was a very cool, sexy song. I’ve dated a couple girls who have always been like, ‘Oh, I love this song.’ I was like, ‘Me too.’ It’s a very pretty song.”
“Heart-Shaped Box” | Nirvana | Cover by Father John Misty
Father John Misty’s Valentine’s Day present to us in 2015 was this haunting and creepy cover of Nirvana’s “Heart-Shaped Box.” His sultry tone and powerful voice channels Kurt Cobain perfectly. This sounds a lot better than a crappy bouquet of flowers. Thanks, FJM.
“No Diggity” | Blackstreet | Cover by Chet Faker
Ah, yes, the soulful Blackstreet song featuring Dr. Dre, Queen Pen, and those infamous white overalls is back. Chet Faker takes this classic and completely turns it around with some indie feel-good vibes, his hypnotic keyboard skills, and ultra mellow voice. This cover makes me want to nestle in Faker’s luscious, red beard.
“Smells Like Teen Spirit” | Nirvana | Cover by Patti Smith
Before Kim Gordon and Carrie Brownstein, there was Patti Smith. The original rock queen recorded a beautiful cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” that makes me want to break down and cry in the best way possible. In her borderline ten-minute cover, she injects her own powerful lyrics and that unforgettable squeal at the tail end.
“Wonderwall” | Oasis | Cover by Ryan Adams
If you thought this song has been overplayed and overdone, you need to check out what Ryan Adams did to it. Slightly country and very indie, Adam’s cover is a softer take on the original with an acoustic guitar and his warm voice.
“It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay” | Whitney Houston | Cover by Chvrches
Chvurches has been known to cover a variety of hits, but the trio brings back this soothing anthem with front woman Lauren Mayberry’s playful voice and electronic beats.
“If” | Janet Jackson | Remix by Kaytranada
Yes, I know a remix is not the same thing as a cover, but I have to make an exception for this one. Kaytranada remixed Jackson’s classic hit “If” by manipulating Jackson’s soft voice to echo in and out with an on-point beat and strong bass. This is a booty shaking kind of remix (peach emoji).
