The Blonds Show Was A Glorious Glitter Bomb [NYFW]

The first thing I saw when I walked into The Blonds’ show tonight was a sign reading, “Please be advised strobe lights and fog effects will be used during this performance.” This was invigorating, but also unsurprising; The Blonds’ shows are always one of the biggest spectacles at Fashion Week, consisting of high-energy presentations that resemble the shows of the pop stars that they design for. It’s a glamorous extravaganza, not unlike the wedding of a polygamous sultan, or bathtime at Mariah Carey’s house.

The SS17 show at MADE New York was classic Blonds, but with a bit of a riff. The Blonds, in their own fantastically over the top way, took on athleisure. They showed menswear, displaying soft sweatshirts—that were of course covered in sequins. Shimmering corsets were shown over ripped tank tops and sliced up skirts. But don’t worry that designers David and Phillipe Blond got too casual; the cut outs in the skirts were accentuated by massive wind machines at the end of the runway, ensuring that every model showed legs for days. So glamorous (oh, the flossy, flossy) (I’m sorry) (I loved it).

The Look That Gave Us Life…

One of the more low-key looks was particularly stunning: an elegant mauve silk cowlneck dress with sequined sleeves, worn over a ripped tank. Another glittering dress (also worn with a ripped tee) gave off major, glorious Roxie Hart vibes.

It’s In The Details…

Male models were silver laurel wreaths in their hair, like shiny, shiny versions of Apollo. All the girls rocked giant blonde, curly wigs, which they absolutely loved—backstage was a sea of selfies.

Surreal Soundtrack…

A chopped up and remixed version of “Can You Feel It” by Mr. Fingers, the song famously sampled in Kanye West’s “Fade,” played throughout the show. It seemed particularly apt considering that “Fade” video star Teyana Taylor and her formidable abs were sitting in the front row.

We Spied…

More like who didn’t we spy. The infectious fun of The Blonds attracts a huge crowd, ranging from downtown icons like Amanda Lepore and Susanne Bartsch to celebs like Kelly Osbourne, Christina Milian, and OITNB stars Dascha Polanco and Vicky Jeudy.

Adding To Our Shopping Lists…
Corsets. Corsets seem to be in this season in a big way, but The Blonds have always done them best. One standout featured a scalloped neckline and massive sculptural roses. How many synonyms are there for “glittering?”
