The Obama x Wes Anderson Mashup We Never Knew We Needed
Politics, in the past year, has been filled with nasty drama. But throughout all the muck, President Obama consistently showed that he truly gives no fucks in the home stretch of his presidency. Tomorrow, January 12th, will be his last State of the Union address, and to celebrate the monumental occasion, the struggle bus drivers over at CNN took note and came up with one of the most brilliant pop culture/political mashups in months.
The team over at CNN Politics went full whimsy, combining bold pastel coloring with the iconic film techniques that make a Wes Anderson movie recognizable from a mile away. That’s right: a major news network actually allowed their staff to create a fake trailer for Tuesday’s State of the Union, all in the film style of the director of all your favorite Bill Murray movies.
“With all the tradition, pomp and quirks,” CNN’s YouTube page reads. “The State of the Union Address is straight out of a Wes Anderson movie.”
The video brilliantly breaks down the admittedly boring procedure behind a State of the Union address. It injected some life into said procedure, interspersed with beautiful scenes that’ll remind you that it’s time for your annual Wes Anderson marathon. Quick cuts jump from facts about the height and width of the White House, to haunting images of unamused Republicans, and that cringe-worthy video of Marco Rubio nervously guzzling a mini bottle of Poland Springs water while fighting to maintain his gaze into your soul.
No word yet on whether the Oscar-nominated director of classics like Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel is into the homage, but we think there’s at least one scene he’ll enjoy. In a direct riff of the reunion scene between Margot Tenenbaum and her brother Richie in The Royal Tenenbaums, a slow-motion cut of Louisiana Governor Bobby “Goofball” Jindal walking up to the camera with his trademark grin is the scene-stealing future GIF you never knew you needed. It’s even set to the same music as the movie scene.
Even though the odds are slim, we’ll be watching the State of the Union address tomorrow with our eyes peeled for some appearance from Bill Murray, Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, or any of the other actors in Anderson’s rat pack. As for President Obama’s speech, we can only hope that he’ll pull from the endless array of Wes Anderson movie quotes at his disposal. Our choice?
“Look at these assholes.”
