These Empty Porn Sets Will Weird You Out

If you say you watch porn to appreciate the craftsmanship of the set, you’re lying. If anything, you watch porn despite all that nonsense in the background. The story behind these “playgrounds of cheapish fantasy,” however, have a deeper meaning for their photographer, Jo Broughton.

While in school, Broughton was hired as an assistant at a porn studio in London. She helped paint, assemble, and clean up these very sets at the end of the day. And, with nowhere else to stay after leaving college, Broughton would even sleep on set. In 2001, she started taking photos of these scenes after everyone else had gone home. The result? A seriously moody photo series, titled simply “Empty Porn Sets,” which perfectly depicts a contrast unique to the porn industry—between a certain feathery idealism and a grittier world underneath (note the used dildos and empty bottles of lube on the floor).

We’ll never look at a porn set the same way again. Okay, that’s still a lie.
