TJ Mizell on His Dad's Legacy and Working with A$AP FERG
While you might recognize TJ Mizell from his days on “Growing Up Hip-Hop” or even the uncanny likeness to his legendary dad, Jam Master Jay, it’s the natural talent and presence that transcend his inherent fame. To be a descendant of music royalty is to both live up to expectations and to forge one’s own, and if anyone’s a prime example of both the former and the latter, it’s TJ. Now an industry figure in his own right, he’s making a name for himself as A$AP FERG’s DJ as well as an integral part of DopeRoots, a DJ-focused label based right here in NYC—but through it all, he’s remained grounded and real in the guiding footsteps of his father. We got personal with TJ on work, life, and the balance in between—read on for the full scoop.
You’re a dope guy doing dope things — tell us about what you’re up to right now.
Right now I’m on the Turnt and Burnt Tour with A$AP FERG, Playboi Carti, and Rob Stone. DJing for FERG is always a wild time. This tour has been pretty crazy so far.
What’s one fun fact about yourself that we wouldn’t find on the Internet?
I love to cook, well I love to eat, so I guess cooking fun stuff goes along with that.
What’s one song you can’t stop listening to right now?
Feel It – GTA x Tunji Ige
What about one piece of clothing you can’t live without?
A good pair of black jeans will forever be in my wardrobe.
Tell us what a day in the life with the Mob is like.
Coolin with FERG and Marty Baller on a daily basis is just straight fun. We’re always laughing or cutting on each other. We’re a family, we spend more time with each other than we do at home. We help shape one another every day.
We’ve seen that you’ve opened up a bit about your dad in past interviews. Can you share with us something that he passed onto you that will inspire you always?
My pops was always big on being the best you could be at whatever you did. I grew up skateboarding and playing sports and my dad would always make sure I was practicing to the best of my abilities. That transfers over now when I’m working on music, DJing, skateboarding, or whatever it may be, I’m always trying my best.
What do you like to do in your spare time when you’re not touring or working?
I spend my spare time skateboarding or riding my bike. I like to stay as active as possible. These things also make like more fun. I think I skate almost every day.
If you weren’t a DJ, what do you think you’d be?
Pro skateboarder or own a skate shop or something like that. Maybe even a drummer in a band.
Any advice for kids looking to break into the industry and do what you do?
Don’t settle for anything less than your dreams. It’s all way too possible.
