TLC Is Coming Back And It's So Exciting That You'll Die
It is now official: TLC is coming back with a new 15-track record later this year! Because TLC is fantastic, and also, the ’90s refuse to die. Despite the tragic loss of singer Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes and a fourteen-year gap between this and their last album release, 3D, in 2002, the group has broken a 14-year silence. Remaining members T-Boz and Chilli are almost done with the record, and it will be the first TLC LP that features only the two of them. It’s set to be the group’s absolute final album.
Last week it was announced by Bill Diggins, the group’s manager, on the TLC Army Facebook page that TLC will be making a comeback around September. T-Boz also announced a tour to support the album this past Saturday at a gala for Sickle-Cell Awareness, a disease she’s suffered from since childhood.
In January, the group started a Kickstarter campaign to produce the album as an independent project. Money problems plagued the group in 1995 due to unfair contract negotiations, and T-Boz and Chilli made sure to address it on their campaign page.
“While major labels offer artists multimillion dollar recording and marketing budgets, they don’t often give artists complete control of their own music. It is ESSENTIAL that we create our final album completely on our own terms, without any restrictions, with YOU.”
Money donated from fans exceeded the original goal of $150,000 in just two days. They’re currently at $430,255, with 4,201 individual backers.
There is a range of incentives for those who donate to the much-anticipated cause. A minimum of $5 will get you behind the scenes updates and a vote for which classic TLC track to remix, and a donation $7,500 or more comes with a photoshoot with TLC (along with, “the vinyl, TLC scrapbook, dance school, fan mail, digital album, our list of favorite songs and Kickstarter exclusive remix!”).
The group promises that their sound will remain, “true to the TLC sounds, always confronting the real issues and life experiences that we all must face every single day, everywhere.”
We still don’t want scrubs, but we do want to hear this album soon! Like, immediately.
