New Trend Alert: Rappers Are Going Vegan. Here's Why You Should Care

Drake said it first: “You ain’t got the juice like that.” But do we know if he was talking about fruit juice? Why not the sea green sludge of green juice? Beets by Dre? More and more rappers are letting go of hunks of meat and grabbing for their eggplants instead. Here at Milk, we highlight the trend by showcasing some of our favorite rappers and their herbology.

H to the IZZO, V to the EGAN. Jay-Z is hip-hop royalty, and he’s sitting on a throne of tofutti. He’s grown up with us, shedding the juvenile leers of “Girls, Girls, Girls” to settle down and marry, building a hip-hop empire that transcends fashion, sports, multimedia, and even shaky Spotify clones. Jay-Z is such a kingpin that he was just announced as the new manager for hashtag hotshot, DJ Khaled. Bless way way way up.

All this success becomes less surprising, though, when you realize that Jay-Z has been harboring magic vegan powers. In 2013, Jay embarked on a 22 day vegan diet alongside Beyoncé, a venture that proved so popular on social media that it eventually blossomed into 22 Days Nutrition, a vegan catering service that will send you 600 dollars worth of vegan snack’ems for exactly 3 weeks and 1 day. Is a quinoa chocolate chip crisp worth that type of bank? It’s so necessary.

Allow me to reintroduce myself!!!! Meet my manager. His name is Jay Z. Jigga. Hov!!! Special cloth alert! The blessings coming in have been overwhelming. So much blessings I needed the right team to help me embrace it right. And when I say embrace I mean brand partnership. When two special cloth brands come together history gets made. I'd like to thank fan luv for walking with me thru the journey of more success. They don't want us to win!!!! So what we gonna do is win more. When I say we, I'm talking fan luv! I'm talking my brother Lenny S! Always seen my vision !!I'm talking Chaka!! I'm talking JIGGA NATION!!!!! I'm up to something. I will never stop!!! I will not lose JIGGA VOICE!!! Ride with me thru the journey of more success. God is the greatest! Bless up. #WeTheBest 🔑#JAYZ 🔑#Rocnation @wethebestmusic JUS KNOW IM WORKING ON NEW MUSIC !! 🔑🔑🔑

The RZA has had trouble getting his voice out lately. After all, only the scrawny faced pharma-boy Martin Shkreli has heard any of his verses on Wu-Tang Clan’s one-of-a-kind album, Once Upon A Time In Shaolin. But, when the RZA is given a platform to speak, he’s just as likely to talk about liquid cayenne cleanses as he is to talk about Liquid Swords. Case in point: he appeared as a spokesperson for PETA in 2014, promoting their “A Better Tomorrow” campaign. “I think hip-hop is becoming more conscious about… diets,” he said, after reflecting briefly on the loveable souls of animal kin. To even be affiliated with the Wu, it seems as if you’ll have to shelve that Atkin’s Cookbook. The GZA, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, and Redman are all herbivores. You can watch the NSFW PETA video below. Beware, since it’s a PETA video, there are some unedited scenes of animal brutality that might shock you into vegetarianism, or, at the very least, make it harder for that McDouble to settle into your stomach lining.

A$AP Rocky

A$AP Rocky is the “pretty motherfucker;” he looks gorg rocking the braids while he’s gorging on veggies all day long. Rocky has a few loves, namely “pussy, money, weed,” but also the humane treatment of chickens. The Harlem rapper told VIBE, “Those chickens go through fucking torture before they’re processed and shit, have all sorts of fucking steroids injected in them and everything.”

Waka Flocka

Last month, Waka Flocka and Raury teamed up with Munchies to make a cooking video about vegan blueberry cupcakes. We all clasped our hands together like proud mothers as we watched them experienced the joy of their lemon-zested, coconut-rich, antioxidized creations. We are overjoyed to report that Waka Flocka approaches vegan desserts with the same enthusiasm that he brings to the studio when recording hypeman vocals.

André 3000

The good news is that André 3000 is back in the conversation. The former Outkast is back in the studio after a painfully long hiatus. He made appearances on both Kanye’s Life of Pablo as well as Erykah Badu’s But You Caint Use My Phone mixtape. Perhaps motivated by his vegetarian diet, Three Stacks seems to be welcoming back the spotlight. André Benjamin was named PETA’s Sexiest Vegetarian way back in 2004, while we were all still bobbing up and down to the viral infectiveness of “Hey Ya!” It’s playing in your head now, isn’t it? Sorry.
