What Did David Bowie Do At Your Age? It Will Bum You Out
It’s the beginning of a new year, which means people everywhere are inspired by a powerful, fleeting impetus to get shit done. The gyms are filled to capacity, and the ink is not yet dry on our ambitious resolution lists. But just as we were starting to really believe in ourselves, there emerges a website that’s sure to discourage even the most fanciful of spirits.
It’s called What Did David Bowie Do at Your Age?, and it’s pretty much just what its name suggests. Type in your age, and you’re greeted with a list of all of the things David Bowie did when he was that old, and an overwhelming feeling of inadequacy. For example, at age 21, while you might have been out getting (legally) blackout drunk for the first time, Bowie had founded his own mime troupe called Turquoise.
Sure, you can try to make yourself feel better by reminding yourself that Einstein couldn’t speak until he was four years old. But guess what? David Bowie could, and he even had a super cool nickname.
And at 15, not only did he form his first band, the Kon-rads, but he also had the flyest hair in the galaxy.
So whether this website is inspiring or horribly disheartening, or both, I think we can all appreciate it for the hidden Bowie gems we may never have found ourselves. Like the fact that he had his first slice of Domino’s pizza when he was 13, for instance, or this 1960 ice cream commercial. He’s so aspirational.
Stay tuned to Milk for tons of Bowie coverage.
