Listen up, fam—a new way to treat depression is coming, and it may be pretty familiar to a lot of you. British scientists plan to conduct a study that investigates shrooms‘ active ingredient, known as psilocybin, in patients dealing with depression, and the study may be conducted sooner than you think.

The study could begin as early as next year, and will be the largest investigation of its kind into the use of psychedelics in the treatment of depression and other mental disorders. If successful, British patients struggling with depression may have access to the presently illegal drug with a prescription. This may be a potential lifesaver for patients with depression, as one in three cases of depression does not respond well to existing treatments, as reported by the DailyMail.

Though shrooms may not be hitting the US pharmacies in the foreseeable future, this is definitely a step in the right direction in ending the war on drugs and allowing people who could benefit from these kinds of treatments to have access to them under the protection of a medical professional.
