J-Pop, like American Pop, is far too vast to define as a genre. In both cases, artists must distinguish themselves by owning their style and image. So it follows that, when showcasing J-Pop in our Friday playlist (this time, courtesy of pop duo TWINKIDS), we couldn’t simply hit play on a track list—we needed the visuals, too.
As promised, this week we’re showcasing TWINKIDS—a group composed of pianist-producer Matt Young and singer-songwriter Gene Fukui—and their love of all things J-Pop. Falling into the infinite genre blend between electro pop and R&B, their just-released (literally, this morning!) debut EP Boys Love delivers on its promise of more of the same electronic ingenuity that “Body Wonder”, their previous single, provides. TWINKIDS is channeling these soft glowing vocals against textured synths that are reminiscent of Blonde-era Frank Ocean, and we’re into it. Who wouldn’t be?
Peep the playlist above and expand your J-Pop worldview, then follow TWINKIDS on Soundcloud to hear the full Boys Love EP.
